How to Plan Your Train and Ferry Journey
Planning your train and ferry journey can be a breeze with Island Travel. To help you get started, here are a few tips for a smooth and enjoyable trip:
Book in Advance
Booking your train and ferry tickets in advance is the best way to ensure you get the seats you need. Since trains and ferries can fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons or holidays, we recommend booking at least a few days in advance. This gives you the peace of mind knowing that your tickets are secured.Check Train Schedules
The State Railway of Thailand operates various trains from Bangkok to Chumphon, where you will catch the ferry to Koh Tao. Be sure to check the train schedules in advance, as departure times may vary. The most popular train options are typically night trains, which allow you to rest while traveling.Lomprayah Transfer Services
Once you arrive at Chumphon Train Station, you will need to catch the Lomprayah transfer to the ferry pier. This transfer is timed to ensure you catch the earliest ferry to Koh Tao. Make sure to arrive early enough to check in for your ferry ride and enjoy a smooth transfer from the station to the pier.Arrive Early
While the train ride itself is relatively comfortable, we always recommend arriving early at the train station to ensure you have enough time to get settled. This is especially important if you’re unfamiliar with the station or have questions about your transfer to the ferry.

Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help answer some common concerns and ensure your travel experience is as smooth as possible.
Can I take a later night train from Bangkok?
If you are looking to take a night train from Bangkok, it’s important to note that the Lomprayah ferry departs from Chumphon Train Station at around 07:00. To ensure that you connect with the ferry on time, it is recommended to take the earlier trains, #85 is perfect. A later train, such as one departing around 22:30, may cause you to miss the ferry.
Alternatively, there is a Lomprayah pick-up from Chumphon Train Station at 11:45, which allows you to catch the 13:00 catamaran to Koh Tao.
Can I make the Chumphon-to-Bangkok train with the 10:15 Lomprayah ferry?
Booking the 10:15 ferry to make the 12:46 train from Chumphon to Bangkok is risky. You would need a private taxi to transfer from the pier to the train station. If the ferry is delayed even slightly, you could miss the train and lose your ticket.
Is there luggage storage at Chumphon and other train stations?
Yes, secure and affordable luggage storage is available at major train stations, including Chumphon, Hua Lamphong, and Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. This is a great option for travelers who need to store their luggage while waiting for their train or ferry.
How far in advance can I book my tickets?
Starting July 1, 2024, the State Railway of Thailand has extended the advance booking period to 180 days for long-distance trains. This means you can book your tickets up to 180 days in advance, giving you more flexibility to plan your trip. For shorter routes or partial journeys, tickets are available up to 30 days in advance or one day before departure.
Can I change or cancel my train ticket?
Yes, it’s possible to change your train ticket, though there are fees involved. If you change your ticket 3 days before departure, the charge is 30%.
